Description

During the fall, typically around All-Fright's End, strong currents will pick up that may be mistaken for a riptide or strong winds on the surface, but ocean-dwellers know better than their surface-residing cousins; the currents are a fortune of the migration to come. Current Brewer jellyfish are admired across Safira as their bodies illuminate the ocean surface, but while that’s where surface-dweller’s knowledge stops, ocean Safirans can talk for hours about their understanding of the strange creatures’ biology.

While Current Brewers are plentiful around the time of the new year, they disappear completely after they reach their destination of the underwater caves of the Northern Island. Much like a caterpillar that metamorphosizes into a luna moth, Current Brewer jellyfish are not meant to survive long after transforming from a polyp into a medusa. Current Brewer medusas have no mouths and lack the typical stinging cells most jellyfish arms have. While they do have small, luminescent particles drifting off of them, these only release an acidic oil when punctured. This means the jellyfish have no way to catch prey, only defend themselves, but this also means that – if you’re really careful – it’s relatively safe to hold a Current Brewer medusa.

Upon reaching the caves, Current Brewers will lay a clutch of eggs and then die with the eggs wrapped in their tentacles. The body of the parent will release a thick layer of acidic oil that protects the young until they hatch into larvae. Immune to the acid, the larvae will consume any remaining oil, so they can adopt the acid themselves (as larvae that don't consume any oil will not have the ability to produce the acidic element that makes Current Brewer oil so unique). Afterward, the larvae swim to the surface and attempt to find something to latch onto, from a whale, to stray shrimp, or even a merchant’s boat. Upon latching onto its host, the larvae will then develop into polyps and will stick to the host until the host dies or the polyp colony develops into a medusa the following winter.
