Saffron keeps the soul gem of their long deceased loved one on the ribbon around their neck. They figured if they took it after they died, they might be able to find a way to bring them back someday?
Their loved one in question was an Aqualox named Surf, who was their mate! Surf died after a particularly bad fight with another Aqualox or two over a huge miscommunication.
